What the sitter wears will have an important impact on the painting. I recommend you bring 3 outfits in most cases, so that the portrait subject can possibly be photographed in a few of the outfits and a choice be made as photos are reviewed. Clothing impacts the level of formality, of course, and also can add visual interest and details, though you won’t want to overwhelm a small child with too much ornamentation. Small children will most likely wear one outfit for the sitting in order to keep things flowing, unless there is a strong interest in seeing them photographed in a second outfit for a choice of images.
I usually recommend going one level up in formality, which will enhance the overall quality of the painting, but this is very much something that will be influenced by your personal tastes and is your decision.
For Girls: I recommend a simple, classic dress in light colors complimentary to the child. White, or any of the many shades of white, ecru, or any light color are lovely and offer a timeless look which will work beautifully in any room you hang your portrait in. Considered how the girl’s face will be “framed” by the dress neckline. Hair bows can add extra beautiful touches to a portrait and usually look best if not too large. Avoid patterned dresses or dresses that are trendy, if you wish for a timeless look.
Boys: Heirloom clothing can be worn with the younger age group if your son does not object. A sailor suit is a nice alternative to French hand-sewn clothing. A simple but comfortable look is a nice button down or polo shirt with khakis or shorts. This can be dressed up by adding a cardigan or pullover sweater. If you desire a very informal look, sport shirts and jeans are acceptable, particularly if your son is very outdoorsy.
