For a young child’s portrait, 4 years old is very popular, but 3-5 years is a lovely window in your child’s life for a portrait. The children have the dear baby look and character traits during this time, but have not started losing teeth.

I have also painted 10 year old children, which is a also a really darling time before the child goes through the teen years. They have a lovely sense of themselves which is delightful to capture.

Older teens have also been a very popular age for my portrait clients, just before they leave home for college or around that time give or take. Group and individual paintings are cherished by parents when they find themselves “home alone.”

In addition, each of the milestone birthdays are very popular for portrait gifts. The gentleman in this image was painted for his 90th birthday gift! 50 years is also very popular!

These are only guidelines and you should move forward whatever ages the children are, if you feel it is a good time for them to be painted.
