Award-winning, professional portrait artist Sonia paints her custom portrait commissions in her studio just outside of Boston, Massachusetts in Wellesley. She is a master portrait artist, having received top portrait awards and studied with the top portrait artists of today. A seasoned, top portrait artist, she has been a portrait painting artist for 20 years. She has completed numerous oil and pastel family portrait paintings and institutional portrait paintings of presidents.
Some of the most notable institutional oil portrait commissions include the painted portrait of Karen Van Winkle, past president of the Harvard Club of Boston, which hangs on Commonwealth Avenue in Boston and the Mayor Sokhary C. Chau of Lowell, Massachusetts, which hangs at Lowell City Hall. Sonia’s portrait painting of John Ettling, past president of SUNY Plattsburgh in New York was also recently unveiled. Other institutional portrait painting commissions have included a posthumous oil portrait of Dr. Dhange, founder of a hospital in India and several oil benefactor portrait commissions for the Pearle L Crawford Library in Dudley, Massachusetts. Sonia enjoys working with her clients to be sure that they are truly satisfied with their commissioned oil portrait painting.
Sonia is a lifelong artist, who worked at a graphic designer in the Boston area and later was fascinated by top portrait artists’ works, most especially including Everett Raymond Kinstler. She wanted to learn how he created such incredible portrait flesh tones, as well as a sense of vitality of the portrait subjects and took workshops with him at the Copley Society of Boston and in New York at the Art Student’s League. He was kind enough to mentor her by reviewing photographs of her painted oil portraits and later by email. She is ever-lastingly grateful to him for his generous nature and kindness in helping guide her with her first portrait commissions. He encouraged her to work from life and this brought her great growth in her work. All the top portrait artists of today have studied portrait painting by painting from life. She is also able to paint portrait from photos, as she studied hard in her earlier years and this shows in her portrait paintings, even though they are usually painted portraits from photos.
